IM Crime Watch is just one component of Interactive Mapping. Using technology to connect people and their communities through mapping, public participation and civic involvement, IM Crime Watch provides a community a way to record the incidents of crime. Using the local daily crime log data, communities can create a visual picture of areas where crime occurs most frequently. Crimes can be logged according to type such as theft, simple assault, trespassing, robbery, sexual assault or other categories.

Community members can work with their police departments or community crime watch organizations to develop their own IM Crime Watch mapping program. Through the joint effort of citizens and public safety organizations, and their power of observation and concern, communities can work together to improve public safety and help reduce crime through awareness and education.
